When I was a girl, my mother sewed constantly: clothes, accessories, household items and more. In those days, girls were expected to know how to sew, because doing so was a way to save money.

Despite learning to sew myself, as an adult I found that sewing did not particularly save me money, nor was it as commonplace: in fact, it was not a complement at all for something to be “home-made”. And with outlets and discount stores, many things were cheaper to buy than to make yourself.

Interestingly though, my opinion changed with the birth of my daughter, when I realized that I had this artistic side that really wanted to create beautiful and fun items. And evidently the same thing happened for many other people at the same time, as the sewing and craft industry experienced a renaissance of sorts that suddenly made it very satisfying to create a “hand-made” item.

No longer were people sewing out of economic necessity: I, and millions of others, sewed because it was a great way to be creative! We sewed because it was fun, relaxing and kept us creatively challenged. We sewed because we wanted to, unlike our mothers who sewed because they had to.

The great thing is that the sewing world is certainly not our mothers’ sewing world! Take sewing machines for example. Sewing machines can do a lot more than just a basic running stitch! Computerized machines now provide endless versatility, with many offering a wide array of stitches, patterns, and even embroidery options.

The Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine is a great example of an “all-in-one machine”. With 97 embroidery designs there is an unbelievable amount of versatility to this machine. There are also 5 built-in embroidery monogram fonts in 3 different sizes that allow the sewer to create a wide variety of emblems, logos, or insignias. The possibilities are endless as is the fun!

Now yes, you can benefit financially from sewing, that is certainly true. Many folks do save money making their own items, and many more have channeled their talents into sewing/altering garments for others. But for for many…as it is for me…the joy is simply in the creation.
