how can i tell when a plants roots have formed?

i replanted part of a bonsai tree a week ago, and its doing very well. how can i check to see if roots have formed without damaging the plant? thanks :D

Answer:
give the stem a gentle tug. if it slips up stop and tamp it down. if it resists roots are forming
