When it comes to common plumbing repairs at your home, the replacement of pipes (copper or PVC) is one of the easiest task to undertake. A broken PVC pipe leads to excess wastage of water which in turn shows in your monthly water bills.
Since PVC pipes are prone to repeated cracks and leaks, their inspection must be a regular feature in your annual itinerary.
Amass all the plumbing equipments and tools that would help you in the project. In addition to the typical plumbing tools such as pliers, hacksaw and screwdrivers, certain specialized tools such as channel lock pliers are also employed in the task. Also the couplings that would hold the new PVC pipe in place are bought as well.
In order to carry out a safe operation, shut off the water supply from the main valve. Move to the project site and expose the area of the pipe which is under the scanner. Observe the crack and mark the area in such a way that six inches are added on either side of the crack. The resulting length of the pipe is removed with the help of a hacksaw.
Before the commencement of the project, place a large-sized container just below the pipe such that no water falls down on the floor. Also a towel or a piece of cloth is tied to the affected area to absorb any water leftover.
Start the cutting operation of the pipe with the help of a hacksaw. Cut one end first and drain it down to the container placed underneath. Now move on to the other end and cut it apart as well. Make sure that all the safety precautions are kept in tact during the usage of the hacksaw. Detach the pipe from the setup and take it down to a local plumbing/hardware store. The width and the quality of the new pipe must be at par with the old cut out pipe. Allow the salesperson to make any recommendation regarding the same and make your decision thereafter. Also buy the associated couplings that would allow the new PVC pipe to adjust to the fixture.
Dry off the edges of the pipe to connect the couplings and apply a bit of sealant on the fixture. Let the sealant bind well to the setup. Next insert the new length into the couplings and again apply a liberal amount of sealant on both the ends of the pipe.
If the things start to fall apart during any phase of the project, make way for a professional.
