Whitewash furniture is one of those things that drifts in and out of popularity. It’s popularity is currently increasing pretty quickly and this is reflected in the quite steep prices that some people are charging. There are places that you can buy high quality white furniture such as bedroom furniture for good a good price, but if you want to make your own here is how.

.Firstly you need to take the item of furniture you want whitewashing and sand it down. A sanding block or electrical sander should be suitable to do this but you might need to strip it chemically if there is a thick build up of paint on the piece. You then need to clean the wood thoroughly to remove all dirt, dust and sawdust. wait for a while so that the item becomes touch dry

.Next mix together two parts white latex paint with one parts water in a container. you need to get hold of a 3″ high quality pain brush and make sure you have a moist clean cloth to wipe away any mistakes you make. Brush the wood following along the line of the grain and use broad sweeping strokes. The paint will soak into the wood so you may need to go over the same patch a number of times.

.When you have covered the piece completely and whilst it is still damp to the touch, wipe a cloth along the grain until it starts to show through again. This is give the wood a light stain look but if you want a deeper more expensive look, just repeat the previous steps as many times as you like, four should do it though.

.When you achieve a look that you are happy with, give the wood another light sanding down to expose the grain and and then seal the wood using a satin clear polyurethane. Let the product dry again, rub over it gently but thoroughly with a nylon abrasive pad and then repeat this last step as many times as needed to get the right look. Use this method to create a great white bathroom mirror, bedside table or even dresser.
