Many people want to have an organized home without the clutter but they do not know how to go about getting rid of the clutter so it is frustrating. It can be difficult to vacuum and dust a house when it becomes too cluttered because all your time is spent on trying to go through the clutter and not in actual cleaning. What usually happens is that you are too tired to finish cleaning once you get all the clutter organized and out of the way. But the good news is there are things you can do to control and organize clutter BEFORE it becomes overwhelming.
The most common things that clutter homes is stack of paper. The piles of paper could include the mail, newspapers, the children’s school work, and work papers. You can organize yourself a few ways to avoid cluttering up your home with stacks of paper.
Let’s talk about what to do with the mail first. Each day take the time to go through the mail right away when you get it and throw away the junk mail immediately. The junk mail gets thrown in the trash before going back into the house for some people. As you open the mail put the bills in a “to do” file instead of a pile. Have a file folder in a desk or kitchen drawer labeled as your “to do” file or you can hang a basket by the main telephone. Then with the other papers you feel are important to keep you need to file them away right then and there and not wait for later. It soon becomes clutter because LATER never seems to come.
You can do the same thing if you bring home papers from work. You can put your important papers in a file folder and then put your papers you need to do something about in another spot or folder.
If you take the newspaper, some people have a bin under the kitchen counter next to their garbage can to place their newspapers and other recyclable papers in. After you read the paper then all you ahve to do is put it in the right bin. Both the recyclable newspapers and the garbage can then be taken out at the same time for convenience.
It is so easy for proud parents to get caught up in keeping every piece of paper their child brings homes from school. Those school papers soon turn into large piles that turn into clutter. It is a challenging to try to get rid of the clutter when you want to keep all your child’s school papers for a memory book.By keeping a box or plastic storage container in a closet or cabinet nearby you can easily solve this dilemma. instead of allowing the paperwork to pile up you can go through the schoolwork and put what you want to keep in a box. Instead of storing the large artwork and science projects you could take pictures of them and then throw them away. In the basement or attic or even under a bed you can keep a large container that you can transfer papers from the closet bos to this more permanent place. This way you can organize clutter and still keep those precious memories that you and your child can look through and remember one day.
In your quest to organize clutter that aren’t papers around your house you must get in the habit of asking yourself “Is this an item that I will use again? You have to be completely honest. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it or needed it in a year you most likely are not going to use it again so, throw it away! You can also consider selling the unused and unneeded items or you can give it to a charity. Sometimes one holds onto to objects not knowing if they will use it in the future but you should just store those for six months and then get rid of them if you haven’t used or needed them.
For your seasonal items purchase some large storage containers that can be stacked on top of each other and put them in an attic, basement, or garage. Always mark you storage containers well so that you will know what is in each one. It can be very frustrating to hunt for the decorations you need by opening up EVERY bin. So mark them and you will always know what each container has stored in it and can locate what you are looking for more easily. Remember if you see that their are stained, broken, or damaged items put them in the trash.
It may take some time to organize clutter around your house at first, but once you have set up a system and routine it will so easy to keep up the things that come into your home. Now enjoy your clutter-free environment!
