Do you love decorating your home? As for many of us the cost is overwhelming. Well I have a secret for you. You can buy inexpensive items and dress them up in a way that says “Expensive”. Once you have set a budget try to stick to it as close as you can. You may find an occasional item that may seem to stretch your budget a little, but that’s okay. A little splurge may excite you and generate more determination to continue searching for those great deals. Put a few really inexpensive accents on and around the item you splurged on. “Wow” It was worth it.

You can easily and inexpensively improve any aspect of your home for a small amount of money. Don’t just sit around wishing you had the money or the know how to create a “Home to be proud of”. Every home has a heart and a hope for happiness. You can find an endless number of high quality household items that you can use to decorate, organize or repair your home by shopping at Thrift stores, Consignment shops, Flea markets or Garage sales. I personally like to start at garage sales because the price is usually right. Thrift stores, Consignment shops and Flea markets are of course reasonable but remember the price includes their commission. For example, a nice wall hanging may be priced at $10.00 at a garage sale, the same item will probably cost you $15.00 or more at a thrift, consignment or flea market purchase. The owner of this item may have paid $50.00 to $100.00 at some retail store a few years ago, so you see how this works, either way you get a good deal. All you have to do is decide which one of these avenues of shopping will best suit you, and then hit the road.

Before you go too far, look around your home and see what you may already have that you can utilize or enhance. Do you have a basket of greenery just sitting there? Try wrapping a set of clear miniature lights into it, and then add a few small colorful accents, for example, cattails, vines of flowers, berries or different shades of greenery. If you don’t have any of these accessories put them on your list.

If you really like the large picture you hung behind your couch a few years ago but still aren’t satisfied, try adding candle sconces on the sides. Choose a type that will blend in your room. There again, this is an easy to find item for your shopping list as are the candles you will need. Some times a little greenery or a small candle ring will add even more.

Your favorite couch or chair may just need a new throw or a few accent pillows. A small gesture like this seems to bring new life. Do you have decorative baskets just stacked around the house? Find one that will sit under your coffee table or end table then fill it with all the magazines, books or newspapers that are lying around the room. There, isn’t that better? Now just keep this going with every room in your home.

When you shop at garage sales go ahead and buy anything you see that you like. The price is right and your home is hungry for change and improvement. If you have never seriously shopped at garage sales for household items you are going to be very surprised at what you can find. For example:

Candles, Picture Frames, Lawn Mowers, Plumbing Fixtures,

Wall Hangings, Shelving, Lawn Furniture, Paint Supplies,

Greenery (All types), Books (all types), Light Fixtures,

As you see, anything your home needs is affordable on any budget. So what do you say, let’s Paint the walls, Spruce up your lighting, Replace the old rusty faucets and Organize the clutter.

Put those shelving units up that you picked up at the garage sale and use them to store or display things that are scattered around.

You won’t believe your eyes and you really won’t believe the money you saved.

P.S. If you want the absolute bottom line price on all your Home Decorating, Home Organizing and Home Improvement items, visit garage sales after noon on the last day of the sale. This is when prices sometimes get slashed in half.

When one is home decorating on a budget, one of the easiest and cheapest ways to change the look of any home is to add color. Choosing the right colors for your home decorating can seem like such a daunting task however, that some people are frozen in indecision. Here are some great, easy guidelines to help teach you how to choose colors for your home.

*Identify a feeling that you want to convey in the home. This will go a long way towards helping you choose the right color scheme. If you are looking for a warm color scheme that wraps you in comfort, try deeper colors in warmer shades such as reds, gold, browns and some greens. Want a light, uplifting feeling? Sunny yellows might be just the ticket. Looking for a calming, serene atmosphere? Pale sky blues, spring greens and lilacs are what you are looking for.

*Find a perfect color scheme by borrowing the colors from a major fabric pattern, rug or wallpaper in the room. Use one of the colors in the pattern for the walls, another for the curtains and pillows, and a third for accessories. Make sure each color is used in at least three places in the room, and is evenly distributed. If you use a bright red as an accent color, you don’t want it all on one side of the room, or it will seem unbalanced.

*Don’t feel you have to paint every wall in a room. To save time and money, especially if you are unsure of your color choice, paint just the focal wall in the room. It will give you the impact without all the time and expense of an entire room redo.

*To expand space in a small home, keep all walls that can be seen at the same time the same pale, cool color. This works great for open plan homes. If you want to use a more vibrant color in the rooms, paint the outside walls the pale, cool color to visually expand the space, then paint the interior decorative walls the deeper color, or use that color on cabinets and furniture.

*Keep in mind colors in a room offer a psychological effect as well. Here is a quick run down of the most common colors, and how they affect those in the same environment.

Red- The color of love and passion, red tends to cause a lively feeling to any room. It can enhance appetite and feel energetic.

Yellow- The color of optimism. You can’t help but to feel good in a sunny yellow room!

Blue- Seen as trustworthy, loyal. Blue is a claming color that feels like sky and water.

Green- The color of nature and peace. Soothing color that is easiest on the eye. Some greens are now used as neutrals in a room.

Purples- The color of royalty and luxury. It can be both uplifting and calming at the same time, depending on whether there is more blue or red in the undertone.

Remember that paint is relatively cheap, and if you don’t end up liking the final result, you can always repaint, or use a glaze over the paint job to tone it down. Don’t let fear keep you from adding color to your life, and to your home decorating, on a budget!

Garage sale decorating, why not?

Summer is a great time to get outside and have some fun! One great way to save money and get some fresh air is to visit garage sales in your area. Garage sales can be a great way to save money on home decor. You may want to do some pre-screening in your newspaper or on Craigslist to check out the larger garage sales in your area. You can find great bargains on everything from furniture, draperies, accessories, dishware and more!

There are a few key points to remember when doing garage sale decorating:

1. Don’t buy things you don’t need. Have a plan before you go out, and know what specific items you are looking for. Don’t buy things just because they are cheap, otherwise you will just end up with a bunch of “junk”.
2. Look for quality. Many homeowners are just looking to clear out their basement or garage, and are selling items that are otherwise valuable. Others just have a bunch of miscellaneous items that could easily be thrown in the trash. Thy to find that diamond in the rough.
3. Everything is negotiable. Don’t just pay the marked price. Try bargaining with the seller, or try getting them to throw in something extra for the same price. You never know what kind of bargain you may get.

And most of all, have fun out there and stay cool!
